The fragrance
that touches the clouds
In the heart of San Gimignano, where the stones seem to challenge the sky, stands Torre Manzoni, the tallest and most imposing of all. At 54 meters high, it dominates the city and holds a fragrant secret that originates where the earth meets infinity.
During the 14th century, the tower became a home and refuge for passing merchants, men who came from all over the known world, bringing with them spices, fruits, herbs, and stories. In the upper rooms, where the air was purer and the wind stronger, it is said that these merchants stored their most precious goods: bergamots from the southern coasts, dried sage leaves from the Mediterranean, and pineapples from the new ocean routes. There, among the warm stones and wooden beams, aromas mingled, enveloping the entire tower in an exotic and refined atmosphere.
In 1632, lightning struck the Manzoni Tower, causing the partial collapse of the facade. But the event left an indelible mark on the memory of the inhabitants: at the moment of impact, the air was filled with an intense fragrance, as if the essences preserved for centuries in the stones had been released by the fire from the sky.
For days, San Gimignano was filled with an intoxicating scent that descended from the heights to the square below.
When the tower was rebuilt seventeen years later, the master masons used new stones and fragments of the ancient walls, still imbued with that mysterious aroma.
Even during World War II, when bombs caused new damage to the structure, it is said that a sweet, citrusy scent rose into the air once again, as if the tower wanted to remind the world of its fragrant soul even in the darkest of times.
Today, those who climb to the top of the Manzoni Tower are not only rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Tuscan landscape.
On clear days, when the wind blows from the south, you can still perceive that ancient scent suspended between history and legend, born from the encounter between world trade and the stones of San Gimignano.
