The most powerful families—the Ardinghelli, the Salvucci and the Cortesi—owed their fortune not only to traditional trade, but also to a treasure that grew in their fields: saffron. Every gram of this spice was worth its weight in gold, and the families who controlled its production and trade could afford to build ever taller towers, challenging the sky and their rivals. It was a virtuous cycle of beauty and wealth: the golden fields fed the family coffers, the family coffers erected stone towers, and the towers protected the fields.
