The pure essence
of the Towers
of San Gimignano
In 63 BC, when Rome was burning amid conspiracies and betrayals, two young patrician brothers, Muzio and Silvio, fled the Eternal City, taking with them a precious secret. As accomplices of Catiline, they not only had political guilt to hide, but also carried in their travel bags the first Crocus sativus bulbs, brought from the East during their travels.
When they arrived in Val d’Elsa, they built two castles: Mucchio and Silvia, the future San Gimignano. But they hid their real treasure in the fertile soil of the hills. They planted those mysterious bulbs in the Tuscan soil, and legend has it that the first saffron blossoms in San Gimignano appeared the year after their escape, as if the earth had blessed their exile by transforming it into eternal wealth.
The written history of San Gimignano officially began in 929, when the first historical document mentioned the “monte della Torre prope Sancto Geminiano” (hill of the tower near San Geminiano), but the aroma of saffron had already been wafting through those blessed hills for centuries.
Towards the end of the early Middle Ages, around the 10th century, the oldest part of the current historic center took shape thanks to the wealth generated by saffron. Merchants and pilgrims traveling along the Via Francigena stopped not only to rest, but also to buy this red gold, which even then was renowned throughout Europe for its incomparable quality.
It was in 1200 that the cultivation of saffron was officially documented, but for decades this spice had already been bringing fortune to local families. The profits were so high that some families decided to use them to build the famous towers. And so the seventy-two towers that gave our fragrance its name were born. The city prospered: saffron traveled to the major European markets and also to the Eastern Mediterranean, carried by ships from Pisa and Genoa. It was the only spice that traveled in the opposite direction to all the others: it did not come from the East, but went there, carrying with it the unmistakable scent of Tuscany.
